One-step Sewer Leak Detection & Location
Pilot Study
Introductory offer:
Assess the effectiveness of Electro-Scan
for low cost

2 to 5 days of Sewer Electro-Scan testing
Estimated length of pipe tested:3,000 ft to 4000 ft each field-day.
Metrotech supplies: Electro-Scan system, operator and report
Utility supplies: 2 man sewer access crew
Cost: $0.50 per foot plus mobilization (no operator training)

Objectives
  • Verify that Electro-Scanning detects all types of potential leaks reliably and accurately for low cost.
  • On site experience for planning and costing a full scale Electro-Scan program.
  • Demonstrate that rehabilitation targeted using accurate pipe defect leak location is highly cost effective

Recommendfed Pipe Selection Criteria
Pipe diameter between 6 inch and 20 inch
Although pipes up to 60 inches can be tested the difficulty of accessing larger pipes would limit the pipe length tested in the short time available for the pilot study.
Pipes that are being considered for rehabilitation.
Electro-Scanning can then be seen as part of an overall assessment program that may include flow monitoring, CCTV inspection and/or joint air pressure testing either carried out before or after the Electro-Scan test. This would be followed by rehabilitation and testing of the rehabilitation's effectiveness.
Pipe sections are located along low traffic density streets (backyard easements are OK).
Setting up traffic control can take considerable time and limit the time available for Electro-Scan testing.
The pipe depths are less than 20 ft
Although testing can be carried out in pipes over 20 ft deep this takes additional set-up time.

Field Support provided by utility
Two man sewer access crew, support vehicle and equipment.
Traffic control.
For low traffic density streets all that is usually required is "road work" warning signs and "cones" around the open manholes that may restrict traffic to one lane in the region of the manhole.
A means of partly filling a small section of the sewer with water
Usually 6 inch and 8 inch sewers do not have sufficient flow for them to fill sufficiently to carryout the test in a reasonable time (10 to 15 minutes)
Access to nearby fire hydrants and hoses or a tanker truck is usually sufficient.
Highly Recommended Option - Sewer jet cleaning truck
Provides a demonstration of how Electro-Scanning can be integrated into regular sewer maintenance operations and can be used as source of water for partly filling the pipe
Pipe Preparation
Pipe is sufficiently free of obstructions for a 3 inch diameter sonde (2 inch in the case of laterals) to pass through the pipe.
